Prince William Reportedly Had Concerns About Meghan Markle Wearing Princess Diana’s Jewelry

But the royal wedding had its fair share of major jewels.

With so many meaningful tiaras and brooches in the royal vault, there’s no telling when an archival diamond or bauble will make an appearance. But according to a new book, Prince William was “concerned” when Meghan Markle showed an interest in wearing some of his late mother’s jewelry during her wedding to Prince Harry. In his new book, The Princess of Wales: The Biography, royal expert Robert Jobson explained that William went to his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, to try to figure things out.

“I have been told that, still concerned about the [romantic] match, he’d sought assurances from the Queen that Harry’s bride would not be wearing any of Princess Diana’s jewelry, even though his own wife was allowed to wear it,” Jobson explained. His book was serialized in the Daily Mail, which has been publishing excerpts.

Meghan didn’t end up wearing any of Diana’s jewelry at her wedding at St. George’s Chapel, but she did wear the late princess’s aquamarine ring to the reception at Frogmore House and has been seen wearing it multiple times since her big day. And while Harry and Meghan’s wedding is still one of the most talked-about royal events, ever, and offered up major moments (like Meghan’s boat-neck Givenchy gown), Jobson said that behind closed doors, things weren’t picture-perfect.

“Despite sharp digs and thin skins on both sides, the wedding at Windsor in May 2018 was a spectacular success,” Jobson added. “In public, the royal family were all smiles, though privately they were at daggers drawn.”

Jobson’s inside scoop echoes Harry’s memoir, Spare, which gave readers a peek behind the glamour and glitz, explaining that Meghan and Kate Middleton had a little situation over Princess Charlotte’s bridesmaid’s dress. Meghan and Harry also spoke about the tension behind the scenes at the wedding during their sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey.

“A few days before the wedding, (Kate) was upset about something—the issue was correct, about flower girl dresses—and it made me cry and it really hurt my feelings,” Meghan shared. “She brought me flowers and a note apologizing, and she did what I would do if I knew that I hurt someone, to just take accountability for it.”
