Chiefs Make Surprise Cut on First Official Day of Practice

The Kansas City Chiefs made a small roster to kickoff the first official day of practice on Sunday.

There’s a lot of attention on the Chiefs after their dramatic win in the Super Bowl over the San Francisco 49ers, and if they can muster up the energy to make another deep run. Kansas City has a talented roster that has 90 players on it but will be paired down to 53 by the end of the summer.

However, before the Chiefs get into the heart of training camp, the team has already made a roster move.
Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com reported on Sunday that the Chiefs waived tight end Gerrit Prince to make room for wide receiver Izaiah Gatherings. Also, the Chiefs saw running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire come off the NFI list and join practice.

Prince was reportedly seen wearing a walking boot Friday at practice, which is not a good sign this early into training camp. The 6-foot-5 tight end was placed on injured reserve in December last season after joining Kansas City’s practice squad in September.
Even if he was healthy, Prince had a tall task ahead of him trying to make the practice squad with the talent that Kansas City amassed at tight end.
Meanwhile, this isn’t Gatherings’ first stint with the Chiefs as he was cut in May after joining the team in December. After being let go by the Chiefs, the former Middle Tennessee State wideout was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers later in the month.

However, Gatherings only lasted a few days with the Steelers, getting cut in early June. He will try to compete for a practice squad spot at a loaded position group, which features a lot of young talent.
