Barry Keoghan tearfully breaks silence on split with Sabrina Carpenter “The truth was right there all along. I know I’m ugly but you shouldn’t have to done that to me”
Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan have gone their separate ways.
A source confirms to PEOPLE that the pair have ended their romantic relationship for now, about a year after they began dating.
“They are both young and career-focused, so they’ve decided to take a break,” says the insider of Keoghan, 32, and Carpenter, 25.
Reps for both stars did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
Keoghan and Carpenter first sparked romance rumors as they were spotted grabbing dinner together in Los Angeles in early December 2023.
The Oscar-nominated actor and the “Espresso” hitmaker first crossed paths during Paris Fashion Week when they both attended a Givenchy show the previous September.
They have since been spotted supporting one another in various pursuits and on social media, with Keoghan regularly leaving sweet comments on Carpenter’s Instagram posts. The Saltburn star was also in the crowd during his then-girlfriend’s Coachella appearance this past April, and even starred in her “Please Please Please” music video in June.
While chatting with CBS Sunday Morning’s Tracy Smith in October, Carpenter revealed that when it came to casting the video, she used her “not-even-biased opinion” — though, she admitted, it also helped that Keoghan was sitting right next to her.
“I was like, ‘Who’s the greatest actor that I can find for this music video?’ And he was next to me in a chair,” Carpenter said. “And he was so excited about it.”
And the compliments went both ways. After the Recording Academy announced its picks for the 2025 Grammy Awards on Nov. 8, Keoghan expressed how “proud” he was of Carpenter while appearing on The Jess Cagle Show.
Reacting to her six nominations — including a song of the year nod for “Please Please Please” — the Irish actor said, “Brilliant, I know. Absolutely brilliant. Feckin’ brilliant, lads.”
“No, I’m really, really happy for her, honestly, and I got to get on the phone soon,” he continued on the SiriusXM show, before teasing the hosts for putting him “on the spot.”
After the hosts joked he probably knew Carpenter’s hit track was headed for the Grammys while working on the video, he said, “Yes, definite, definite.”
“I don’t know anyone who works as hard. I’m in awe watching her work and how committed and the standards that she sets,” Keoghan added. “Especially being on that music video, just, she knows the vision. She knows what she wants.”
